High School

*Make sure to take the most rigorous courses available and maintain good grades especially if you are interested in more competitive colleges. Colleges will look at the number of honors courses, AP courses, Dual enrollment courses, etc that you have taken vs what your high school offers

*Extra Curriculars - make sure to join clubs and organizations. It’s about quality over quantity. Colleges can tell if you are just joining to have something to add to your resume. Do things that are meaningful to you and impactful. Leadership positions look great on your resume as well. Starting a club or organization does too.

*Volunteer Work - Most colleges will want to see you making a change in your community. There are also several scholarships from colleges that are directly tied to community involvement.

*Stay organized. Keep a notebook or online document to help keep track of things such as: *Volunteer organizations/contact person/dates and times that you volunteered

*Awards that you won during high school

*Extra curricular activities/positions held/how many hours per week/description

*ACT/SAT dates and scores

*Make sure to build bonds with teachers as you will need them to write recommendation letters for colleges as well as scholarships.

*High School Portals - some high schools use portals such as Naviance and Scoir. In this the student creates a profile. The recommendation letters are stored here as well. You can add colleges to your list and see information about each college (acceptance rates, average scores, how many people from your school have applied in the past and if they have what their gpa and act/sat scores were and if they were accepted, rejected, deferred or waitlisted, etc). This is also where you will be able to notify your guidance counselor when you submit an application so they know to process the school reports, recommendation letters, etc. You also updated your outcome here when you hear back from the colleges.
